Regen Brand Commons and the $REGEN token symbol

Forum Post for Regen Network Governance Forum: Creating a Regen Brand Commons

Hello Regen Network Community,

I’m excited to share the ongoing efforts and vision behind the creation of the “Regen Brand Commons.” This initiative aims to manage the “Regen” brand as a “headless brand,” fostering a virtuous cycle of collaboration, innovation, and creativity while protecting our community from copycat attacks that could undermine our trust and legitimacy in community-owned nature markets.

Understanding the Process

We’ve been collaborating with various organizations like Gitcoin, ReFiDAO, Regen’s Unite, BasinDAO, and others to create a system that uplifts and builds coherence around the term “Regen.” The aim is not to enforce a traditional trademark but to invite a DAO governance process to create a commons around the Regen brand. This process ensures it serves a coherent movement and aligns with web3 native values and norms.

You can delve into more details about these efforts in this Google document.

Max, from the token engineering WG has been key, as have allies from Metagov and blockscience.

Recent Developments

Recently, the launch of a new $REGEN token on Optimism has accelerated our efforts. We’ve engaged with the team behind this “culture coin” to collaborate and build coherence. For more information, you can check their introduction on the Optimism Governance Forum.

Protecting the Regen Mark

The Regen Mark, a trademark obtained by RND PBC in 2020, is crucial to our Network, Ledger, Registry, Marketplace, and $regen ticker. We are inviting DAO governance to create a commons around this brand and mark, ensuring it serves a unified movement. This process has been taking place across various platforms, including the Commons Stack/Token Engineering Commons Discord, Metagov Slack, and Regen Ecoweaving Signal

Thank you for getting this dialogue going here Gregory!

What is a Commons?

Before we dig into the topic at hand, I think it just worth recapping the definition of a commons. David Bollier, a prominent advocate for the commons, defines the commons as a social system for the long-term stewardship of resources that preserves shared values and community identity. The commons involves a resource, a community that manages it, and the rules, norms, and governance structures that the community develops to manage the resource sustainably. Bollier emphasizes that the commons are not just resources but also the social practices and values that sustain them, often focusing on equitable access, participatory governance, and ecological sustainability.

In his works, Bollier often highlights key aspects of the commons:

1.	Community: A group of people who manage the resource and have a shared interest in its sustainability.
2.	Resource: A tangible or intangible asset that the community depends on, such as water, forests, information, or cultural heritage.
3.	Governance: The rules, norms, and practices that the community develops to manage the resource, often emphasizing collaborative and inclusive decision-making processes.

Bollier argues that the commons offer an alternative to both market-based and state-controlled resource management, promoting a more democratic, equitable, and sustainable way of living.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, the next question is, why would it be important to try to steward the meaning of the term regenerative?

On the Anti-Pragmatism of Cultural Appropriation

The term cultural appropriation is often used in debates surrounding the removal of something of cultural significance from its community and context. Mythologist Sophie Strand refers to this process as deracination (“uprooting”).Setting the ethical dimensions of the conversation aside for a moment, I’d like to speak to the pragmatic elements of appropriation, and other pa

brawlaphant, in op forum,

This is quite noble of you and the regen network, with owocki’s idea and your proposal, we are able to efficiently capitalize on the success of this meme, it appears to have significant legs to stand on as a hyped airdrop that’s based on donations and retirements(or so i’ve heard haven’t seen retirements yet).

just looked deeper on the google doc, the technical discourse here is quite kind, but a lot of value should flow to regen network.

as an investor, my view is simple, ensure maximal value flow to regen network. i don’t want to get in the way of the technical implementation forming here. I just want regen token in more markets onchain.
