Natural Capital Tools - Collab Regen Network x BASIN

Hello everyone, TMO here from BASIN Natural Capital. I have also sent this to RND but wanted to post here for discussion; posting in “Resources” but I think it has overlap with Registry, Foundation, Community Pool, and Marketplace.

Would Regen Network be interested in a collab on the following? We have all the heavy lifting done and are now looking for: a) scientific / academic critique and b) headline sponsorship to help fund the embed-able .js tools.

  1. Land Cover & Ecosystem Typology Cross Reference Tool - It currently includes BASIN Land Cover & Ecosystem Typology, FEMA, ESVD, IUCN Habitat, IUCN GET 2.0, ESRI Land Cover, USGS, & Dynamic World. Adding NatureServe IVC as we speak. Also working on correlation of WWF 200, Ecoregions, and Bioregions 2023 to these.

  2. **Ecosystem Service Cross Reference Tool **- It currently includes BASIN Core Benefits, Swiss Re BES, FEMA 2022 / MA 2001 Full list, ESVD 2020 (TEEB), TNFD ES’s and EA’s, CICES (SEEA), IPBES - Nature’s Contributions to People, ENCORE, InVEST, SEEA 6.1, and Non-ES Classifications.

  3. CO2 Sequestration by Land Cover / Ecosystem type per acre (or ha) per year Compilation - Current summary below. In the process of adding additional land covers for next version.

In addition to the above we are almost done with our RealValue methodology which quantifies the value of the 25 Core Benefits below:

All of this will be published under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) and it would be great to have participation from the community.

I think it might be worth a review of the framework proposed by Intrinsic Exchange for their Natural Capital Corporation filing

Hi all, I’m Jan and have been working / conversing with TMO on various Basin topics, but have not been intimately involved in the creation of this methodology.
Here are my thoughts on the topic:
The primary goal for a collaboration would be to get eyes and peer review on the methodology (input sources and their weighting, algorithm & logic) and receive feedback. Does it make sense and if not, what’s missing or could be corrected? IMO, the RealValue methodology is a serious attempt to take established frameworks and apply them to gain the ability of deriving a dollar value for ecosystem services provided by a particular property … and make that process repeatable for any property. There might be different ways to approach this, but I’m not aware of any other attempts.
Secondly, there’s the question of how this can be useful within the Regen Network ecosystem or wider Regen space? Assuming it can established that the logic of the methodology is sound, the whole thing could be packaged into a library and/or exposed as a service. Would a platform listing regenerative projects (linked to properties) want to show RealValue summary reports for them? I think Why Not? Pair it with EBF icons and you have some nice indicators and a summary for the ecological status and the monetary value of a property.
In the end, the RealValue in $$ or pesos or zloti is simply another “marker” for a world that takes the value of ecosystem services into consideration.

Here are some more updates.
